A Checklist for Evidence needed and How to get it Before Contacting Authorities: Sandra Osborne

Sandy Osborne is a 24 year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orlando, Florida. Her tour of duty includes uniform patrol, tactical patrol, community policing, crime scene investigation, sex crimes, child abuse, and currently she is assigned to the digital forensics unit. Digital forensics is a diverse field of scientific study that encompasses a wide variety of disciplines to include cell phones, GPS, tablets, computers, external disk drives, printers, and more. The OCSO lab is currently staffed with three examiners. In 2013, we took in almost 600 devices (over 350 cases) where some type of electronic device was used in the commission of a crime. There is no limit to the ways in which criminals are using technology to facilitate crime. If you carry a smart phone or use a computer, you should familiarize yourself with how to protect yourself and your personal data. If you are a victim of a crime where an electronic device was used, there are ways you can preserve valuable evidence prior to calling the police that will help us in determining the when, where, what, why and how the perpetrator unlawfully accessed your user account or online profile. Here is a list of some of the topics we will discuss:

What is a cybercrime?

How do I know if I am a victim of a cybercrime?

Is cyber bullying a crime?

What evidence do the police need to successfully prosecute the cybercrime criminal?

Mobile Devices – How to screen capture on Android and iOS devices

Facebook Artifacts

Windows 7 and 8 snipping tool – Great for capturing on-screen text and pics on your computer

Mobile Apps – Do they leave a trace?

Can someone tap into my cell phone and follow me around?

What is Cyberstalking?
